When creating a document with Google Docs, you may want to include a link, or hyperlink, to an external website. Links are useful for creating a bibliography to cite sources, link to Google Docs, reference YouTube videos, or another instance that requires a page to be opened in Google Docs.

How to insert a link in Google Docs

  1. Select the portion of text you want to link to an external page by dragging your cursor across the text.
  1. Click the Insert link icon, or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+K.

Insert link option in Google Docs

  1. In the Link text box, enter the URL of the external website, or paste the URL from the clipboard using Ctrl+V.
  2. Click Apply.
Tip

The text in a link can be edited like any other text. If you want to change the URL text, or remove the link altogether, click the link and select Change or Remove.
